JLGC Initiates Children’s Museum Project

January 01, 2003

The Junior League of Greater Covington had just launched its first cookbook and was exploring the idea of tackling larger community projects that would enhance the League’s motto, “Women Building Better Communities.”

JLGC identified a long term vision and need in our community:  a Children’s Museum in St. Tammany Parish.  The closest children’s museums were located in either New Orleans, Louisiana or in Gulfport, Mississippi.  A family or school bus would have to travel at least one hour away in order for children to engage in interactive learning in a museum setting.  The idea of creating a local museum exclusively for children, to foster the love of learning through exploration, creativity and imagination was exciting. A Children’s Museum was considered as a community project to fulfill this need and to foster volunteerism amongst the League’s members.
