Hurricane Katrina

August 29, 2005

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina had a disastrous effect on the JLGC.  The continuation of planning, setting up funding, and choosing a Task Force for the Children’s Museum was placed on hold until Parish government and JLGC members were able to move forward with such a project.

Although the Northshore is 30 miles north of New Orleans, most residents in St. Tammany Parish were affected by the enormous amount of tree damage on the western side of the Parish as well as severe flooding on the eastern side near Lake Pontchartrain.   Additionally, St. Tammany Parish became a staging ground for many emergency personnel and a large population from the New Orleans area sought shelter and temporary housing for many months.
